Novell insists it’s winning the Linux wars

In the third of a series of interviews by Linux Foundation executive director Jim Zemlin, Novell CEO Ron Hovsepian (right) insisted his company is not being hurt by its association with Microsoft.

“Novell grew 200% in the SUSE Linux marketplace year-over-year from an invoicing perspective,” he said. The overall market is growing at 22% according to IDC,” and “we’re taking some market share from our competitors.

Microsoft To Open Source: Let's Be Friends

In a move that many industry watchers expected would happen just after hell froze over, Microsoft Corp. on Thursday unveiled a strategy for increasing its support for industry standards and improving its traditionally frosty relationship with open source communities.

Microsoft's new openness and interoperability plan focuses on high volume products such as Windows Vista (including the .NET Framework), Windows Server 2008, SQL Server 2008, Office 2007, Exchange Server 2007, and Office SharePoint Server 2007, as well as future versions of these products.

Novell vows to keep fighting Microsoft 'juggernaut'

SYDNEY, Australia--Novell will continue its march against Microsoft and the Vista operating system despite a recent alliance with the software giant.

"We're excited by the muted reaction to Vista," Ron Hovsepian, Novell's chief executive, told the media at a meeting here Thursday. "We're going to attack (Microsoft) vigorously and go after their footprint as much as we can."

Microsoft's Vista was five years in the making, so the code behind it is very complex, Hovsepian said, whereas open source is more nimble and flexible. "And we have got to take advantage of that."

Despite Novell's commitment to attack the market on its own terms, Hovsepian acknowledges that there are benefits to its alliance with the software giant. The two companies signed the pact in November and fleshed out details of it this week.

The reality is you can't escape the "Microsoft juggernaut" in the marketplace, so you have to work with them to get your foot in the door, Hovsepian said. When you talk to customers, he said, most will say "I hate Microsoft." Yet those same customers say 60 percent of their servers run on Windows--not Linux, which Novell backs.

Novell Says In Court Filing That SCO Owes It Millions

Novell delivered a roundhouse punch to SCO in their dispute over who owns the copyright to Unix.

Novell filed court papers Monday saying SCO received nearly $26 million in Unix System V license fees from Microsoft and Sun Microsystems. But, contrary to its 1995 Asset Purchase Agreement with Novell, SCO has failed to pass them on to Novell.

Novell says the agreement states it is entitled to 100% of the fees, according to a motion for partial summary judgment or preliminary injunction filed by Novell lawyers in the U.S. District Court in Salt Lake City.

Why Microsoft/Novell is good for Linux

Being aware, as I am, of Microsoft's monopolisation endeavours, coupled with working in a Linux world inherently mistrustful of the software giant, it may seem strange that I believe the Microsoft/Novell agreement will be great for Linux. But I do.

Why? Interoperability between Microsoft and Linux has been one the greatest challenges for software publishers and system integrators in the Linux world. The Microsoft/Novell agreement will no doubt help to bridge the gap and make it easier for software buyers to run both Windows and Linux-based systems. But it is not only integration — vital though it is — that I believe will propel Linux further into the mainstream. It is Microsoft's endorsement of Linux, their yielding 'if we can't beat them, join them' attitude that floods Linux in limelight. The market's gaze has never been so drawn to Linux and now is our time to stand and be counted.

Hell: Frozen Over

In an announcement many thought they would see only after hell froze over, bitter rivals Microsoft Corp. and Novell Inc. recently signed a peace agreement that lays the foundation for Windows and Linux and their respective applications to work smoothly together. Under terms of the deal, Microsoft will offer its corporate customers a chance to license its Windows operating system as part of a package offering maintenance and support for Novell's SuSE Linux operating system.

"They said it couldn't be done," says Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. "This is a new model and a true evolution of our relationship that we think customers will immediately find compelling because it delivers practical value by bringing two of their most important platform investments closer together."

Novell: in it for the interop, not the money

A jointly sponsored Microsoft and Novell survey purporting strong customer support for the companies’ controversial alliance looks like back firing on Novell.

While the poll of 201 IT executives with “significant” purchasing power found near unanimous support for interoperability between Linux and Windows, relatively few said they’d actually pick Novell’s SuSE Linux Server (SLES) as a result of the deal.

Microsoft-Novell survey gives their deal a thumbs-up

Microsoft and Novell on Tuesday published results from a jointly commissioned survey that asserts the two companies' high-profile agreement will drive customers away from joint rival Red Hat.

Communications firm Penn, Schoen & Berland Associates, which has been doing research for Microsoft for eight years, conducted 201 interviews with IT professionals to garner opinions on vendor partnerships and interoperability between Windows and Linux.

Microsoft claims customer mandate for Novell Linux deal

Microsoft today claimed that there is "strong customer support" for its recent alliance with Novell.

The Redmond giant said that a survey of IT decision makers it commissioned from market research firm Penn, Schoen & Berland Associates shows overwhelming support for the deal. Nearly all respondents were said to want to improve Windows/Linux interoperability and have tools that make it easier to manage mixed Windows and Linux environments.

Microsoft deal good for Linux - Novell SA chief

More Linux companies should look at striking a deal with Microsoft. This is the line from Novell SA country manager Stafford Masie who was speaking at the CITI Foss Forum in Cape Town last week.

"This deal is not an exclusive arrangement with Microsoft. We are encouraging Redhat, Ubuntu and others to consider a similar agreement with Microsoft. We are encouraging them ... especially from a patent perspective," said Masie.

Microsoft, Novell ensure Linux, Windows compatibility

Early this month, Microsoft and Novell both announced an agreement that will ensure interoperability between Novell's SUSE Linux Enterprise with Microsoft's Windows operating system.

Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will officially recommend SUSE Linux to their customers who want a mixed environment of Windows and Linux solutions. They will also distribute coupons for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server maintenance and support to Microsoft's customers.

'Windows scores over Linux in ownership cost'

A Frost & Sullivan study commissioned by Microsoft on the total cost of ownership (TCO) of IT assets has revealed that Microsoft Windows 2003 environment across enterprises scores over Linux.

MS Windows 2003 has close to 15.9% advantage over Linux and constitutes lower TCO in 80% of the instances encompassing application servers, network servers and mail servers.

Microsoft denies sinking Linux project (Windows XP is suddenly cheaper)

SOFTWARE GIANT Microsoft has denied slashing the price of Windows XP in a bid to get Birmingham City Council to drop its Linux project. Brummy Birmingham had planned to roll out 1,500 Linux PCs in its libraries, but in the end converted just 200 PCs. Apparently it 'suddenly found out' that Windows XP was cheaper than the free open sauce software.

Ballmer: Linux users owe Microsoft

In comments confirming the open-source community’s suspicions, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer Thursday declared his belief that the Linux operating system infringes on Microsoft’s intellectual property.

In a question-and-answer session after his keynote speech at the Professional Association for SQL Server (PASS) conference in Seattle, Ballmer said Microsoft was motivated to sign a deal with SUSE Linux distributor Novell earlier this month because Linux “uses our intellectual property” and Microsoft wanted to “get the appropriate economic return for our shareholders from our innovation.”
