Jeremy Allison on Microsoft-Novell Deal
Samba guru explains why he couldn't stomach
the Microsoft-Novell deal. “If you want to sell out, you should ask for
more," he says.
Jeremy
Allison is a hero in the open source community these days. After
spending two years at Novell, he decided to leave the Waltham,
Mass.-based software company for reasons of principle right after the
Linux-vendor signed a deal with Microsoft (see Microsoft, Novell in Linux Pact and Open-Source Guru Goes to Google).
The
agreement will allow Microsoft and Novell’s customers to use the other
firm’s intellectual property without being sued. As a result, Microsoft
will pay Novell $400 million. However, Mr. Allison and other open
source believers argue the pact violates certain rules of the GPL (GNU
General Public License), a popular free software license.

The gag is off: Samba’s Allison talks turkey on Microsoft-Novell deal
On December 21, word leaked out that lead Samba developer Jeremy Allison quit Novell in protest over the Microsoft-Novell alliance, unveiled in early November.
Other than sharing the fact that he had taken a new job with Google,
Allison said he couldn't provide specifics on his decision until some
time after December 29, which would be his last day at Novell.
Today is December 30, so the gag order is over. And Allison isn't holding back.
My favorite line from Allison in this latest interview: "I don't
want to give my efforts to a company that is willing to try and trick
their way out of their license obligations on my software."

Open-source leader leaving Novell for Google
Jeremy Allison, a high-profile open-source programmer, has resigned
from Novell because of objections over its patent deal with Microsoft
and is moving to Google.
In his resignation letter, Allison said Novell's patent pact with Microsoft
has crippled the Linux seller's relations with the open-source
community. At Google, he'll continue his work on Samba, the open-source
project he helped launch. Samba is software that lets Linux servers
share files on Windows networks.

Jeremy Allison resigns from Novell in protest
Groklaw is reporting that Jeremy Allison (Mr. Samba) has resigned from Novell in protest over the Microsoft-Novell patent deal.
"Whilst
the Microsoft patent agreement is in place there is *nothing* we can do
to fix community relations. And I really mean nothing," Allison wrote.
"Until the patent provision is revoked, we are pariahs....Unfortunately
the time I am willing to wait for this agreement to be changed ...has
passed, and so I must say goodbye.
You can read the full text of his resignation on Groklaw.
